Available Space - conflict with Time Machine
My Drobo stopped backing up a while ago,

Drobo 4 Gen / MAC Pro Tower

The Drobo Dashboard says:
Firmware 1.4.2 [1.254.50341]
USED 2.71 TB (75%)
FREE 915.96 GB (25%)
Total 3.60 TB

Its linked with Time machine which says:

The backup disk needs 755.90 GB for the backup but only 217.13 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.

Am i reading the numbers wrong? Do i need to put more storage in?
Thanks for any help offered.

(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused)
& a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)
  • btw i did a sustained (write) operation for about 6 hours, and got 13.2MB / sec ...objection? "sustained" :)
    (16.7MB/s on a v2 & 47-96MB/s drobo-s)

Hi Paul, yes it was, sorry i didn't see that previous reply.
The problem is now sorted, i ended up deleting the backups and starting again and it all seems to work. Many thanks

RE: Available Space - conflict with Time Machine
Hi Paul,

not long after it stopped working again, after trying a number of things I ended up replacing a 1TB HD with a 4TB HD and reformatted. So i now only have one volume, and i can't seem to find a way to make it into two volumes with my Drobo Dashboard. Previously i had two volumes and seem to remember this is the better option. I formatted the one volume as 16TB as recommended. Unlike Drobo Pro / S I have Drobo, which doesn't seem to have an 'add partion / volume' option. Could you shed any light before i start backing up onto a single volume?

Thanks, Ruth

RE: Available Space - conflict with Time Machine
ah hi ruth,
it may be that the (newer?) version of dashboard you are using, does not have an option to select a smaller volume size...

it may be that they set a larger default volume size, possibly due to a lot of users asking questions when popups appeared asking to format another volume, (which is fair enough, and i certainly asked some questions when i first encountered it too) Smile though there are indeed benefits to multiple smaller volumes which ive mentioned before on other posts, and for me i prefered, and needed to use 2TB max volumes myself, in order to be able to hook up the drobos to my dads xp computers for backups etc. (currently have about 8 of the smaller volumes across all drobos)

if you do not need specifically need multiple smaller volumes, (and are happy to manage your overall free space via dashboard and to keep 1 large volume for now) it may be ok for you but if you actually want the smaller ones then you may need to try an older version.

am not sure which version you have currently, though i believe dashboard v2.5.3 should be able to support 2TB volumes, also available via links from here, (though you may need to go up a folder for different computer versions)
