How do I create 1 volume, instead of 2?
Drobo Dashboard creates 2 16TB volumes on setup. How can I get only 1 volume?

REF:
Drobo GEN 3 firmware 3.2.2
Dashboard 2.8.1
4 6TB harddrives
MacMini OS X 10.11.5

Doug
Drobo Gen 1, firmware: 1.3.8
Dashboard: 2.5.3

RE: How do I create 1 volume, instead of 2?
hi doug,
can i check if this is the same set of drives that you migrated from your older thread here?
http://www.drobospace.com/forums/showthr...http://www.drobospace.com/forums/showthread.php?

(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused)
& a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)
  • btw i did a sustained (write) operation for about 6 hours, and got 13.2MB / sec ...objection? "sustained" :)
    (16.7MB/s on a v2 & 47-96MB/s drobo-s)

No, those drives were 4 2TBs in a Gen 1 Drobo. These are 4 6TBs in a Gen 3 Drobo.

RE: How do I create 1 volume, instead of 2?
ok thank you for the info doug,

as far as i know, the gen3 does not yet support huge single max volume sizes,
for example the 5n and 5d can have a single 64TB volume as mentioned here:
https://myproducts.drobo.com/article/AA-01867

in your case, i am not sure if you have single drive redundancy (sdr) or dual ddr, though if we imagine your drives are using sdr as follows, then this may explain why:

6+6+6+6=24TB
-6 for sdr = 18TB
18TB *0.9 (for approximate filesystem formatting/overhead) = about 16.2TB

so this may be what is causing you to have 2 volumes (showing 16TB max)
though dashboard will show the actual accurate total free space remaining on the drobo.

if this is the case, i dont think you will be able to turn it into 1 single volume (without using 3rd party tools such as drivebender), and would probably recommend keeping it as it is for now if you can, though am probably not the best person regarding huge volumes as i still use (and need to use) multiple 2TB volumes.... currently 8 of them Smile

RE: How do I create 1 volume, instead of 2?
As already noted, you cannot create a volume bigger than 16TB on a Gen3. But with 4x6TB drives, you get a 16TB and what would be a mostly useless .2TB if you fill one up first. What I did was use Windows Disk Management and remove the drive letter, so it's invisible. I did some testing, and the Rename option can be used to re-assign a drive letter (and I assume Disk Management as well, I didn't try) if you ever start replacing drives and need to re-activate the volume for expansion.

It would be nice if Dashboard had an option of assigning a blank drive letter.
