Drobo (Gen 3) Materially Performance Problem
MY device transfer speeds are glacially slow, When transferring a 750 MB video file, top speed is 12 MB/s per Windows and the Dashboard Performance has IOPS: 4 and Write Throughput at: 1 MB/s. Connecting another USB 3 drive to the same port has fantastic performance.

Key points:
- 4 1.5 TB drives installed and only 3% free which is not a problem at this time
- The drive in Bay 3 is listed as "healed".
- Just purchased two 3 TB drives and plan to replace the third and fourth drives
- I did review the post - http://www.drobospace.com/forums/showthr...http://www.drobospace.com/forums/showthread.php?
- Drobo Dashboard and firmware is current

Questions:
1. Will freeing up space resolve the issue?
2. Is the healed drive possibly the problem.
3. Any other suggestions.

RE: Drobo (Gen 3) Materially Performance Problem
hi hms350,
i think that once you go down to 5% or less free space (in any device as far as i know), filesystem usage speed will be affected quite badly.

if a drive has been encounting "some" problems, even if rectifiable, (and is healed), that could also add some delays to the overall process. with this in mind, i think replacing that healed drive first could be the best option (in case you replaced another drive and the healed one had too many problems and failed during the upgrade or while the system was degraded)

you might have replaced drives before, though if you have not, then you could eject and remove that failed drive while the drobo is stable and still running (known as a hotswap), and the main drobo gen3 unit & dashboard should shortly after recognise this fact and then you can put the replacement in (hotswap) and the unit and dashboard should shortly after recognise this too.

(i dont think i have ever added in a larger drive unless i had more than 5% free space, but if you look at my sig, then even my gen2 got about 16MB/s so hopefully once the healed drive and more free space are both addressed, things will be quicker for you)
also to add that only 1 drive should be upgraded at a time, and the time to rebuild is approximately 1 day per 1TB of data that you have (depending on if you are using the drobo meanwhile). then once the 1st rebuild is complete, try to wait about 5mins at least before doing the 2nd drive.

(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused)
& a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)
  • btw i did a sustained (write) operation for about 6 hours, and got 13.2MB / sec ...objection? "sustained" :)
    (16.7MB/s on a v2 & 47-96MB/s drobo-s)

RE: Drobo (Gen 3) Materially Performance Problem
Thank you. You are correct. I removed a large amount of files and pretty much immediately performance was where it should be for USB 3. It would be ideal if Drobo put this in the warning as having approximately 3% / 127 GB free was not an issue for me. The Heeled drive was pretty much an FYI that at one time the drive was heeled, it was not an issue. I did replace two 1.5 TB drives with two 3 TB drives with plenty of space available. I replaced one at a time and it took about 8 hours for each 1.5 TB drive before they were ready to go. I now have two 1.5 TB and two 3 TB drives.

I also learned that if you do not extend maintenance, you have 90 days grace and then there is now way to extend. Drobo does offer pay per incident support: http://www.drobostore.com/collections/drobohelp,

RE: Drobo (Gen 3) Materially Performance Problem
hi, thanks for the info - am glad your speed improved.

there is a suggestion area and please feel free to add a post for more info (maybe in dashboard) about the 5% free mark:
http://www.drobospace.com/forums/forumdi...http://www.drobospace.com/forums/forumdisplay. as some suggestions or feature requests have actually made it into future versions.

btw i think there is a way to extend it by way of a drobocare though (rather than a drobohelp). i think its about 50-60 pounds (dollar equivalent per year for a 3 year option) based on this page though please have a look here for more info in case i misunderstood:
