Should I remove my smallest drive?

Question Should I remove my smallest drive?
I just completed my migration from a bunch of random external and internal drives to a Drobo Gen3 (4-bay).

I did it sort of piecemeal to make use of old drives while preserving data, and now have four drives in there and it's working great:

- 3TB
- 3TB
- 2TB
- 4TB

Now that I'm done, it occurs to me that the size of the array is probably determined/limited by the smallest drive.

Would I actually gain total storage space by removing the 2TB drive?

Thanks in advance,

Donnie

RE: Should I remove my smallest drive?
2TB drive should be next to upgrade, but don't remove it yet.
Total capacity is roughly sum of drives - largest drive.

Try this calculator: http://www.drobo.com/storage-products/ca...http://www.drobo.com/storage-products/capacity-c

drobo 2nd Gen, drobo 5N

RE: Should I remove my smallest drive?
hi its like bytec says,
if you were to "only" remove that 2TB drive then your actually going to reduce your overall total pool of usable storage, and certainly wouldnt gain any additional space, (you probably were going to be removing and adding in a larger new drive in its place but just to mention) Smile

(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused)
& a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)
  • btw i did a sustained (write) operation for about 6 hours, and got 13.2MB / sec ...objection? "sustained" :)
    (16.7MB/s on a v2 & 47-96MB/s drobo-s)
