What is Drobo doing in background by itself?
What is Drobo doing in background by itself?

I can alway hear the drive inside my Drobo 5D is crazy seeking, the noise is significant different from noise of rotation.
The noise happens while I am doing nothing with Drobo, (Time Machine is disabled)

Even I unmount the Drobo under Mac, the noise is continually keeping.
iostat report shows there is no IO happening to Drobo.

Only unplugging cable can kill the noise.

RE: What is Drobo doing in background by itself?
two main processes :

Optimising the layout of the data - when first written it will be laid out in the fastest way - sometimes even mirrored perhaps. in the background it will optimise the layout, possibly including writing parity, or maybe closer to a defrag.

also, it scans all the disks and re-checks all the parity to ensure your data is safe. this happens at least once a month.

basically it protects your data, which is why you bought it Smile

I have a owned a Drobo v1, v2, DroboPro, Drobo 5D, DroboFS, Drobo 5N and DroboPro FS

I currently have a Windows 2016 Server with 8 x 8TB Seagate Archive Drives, 14 x 8TB WD Red and 3 x 8TB WD Gold

RE: What is Drobo doing in background by itself?
Is there any way to see when it might be done? I added a drive to mine and the write performance has been really slow since. There is no indicating in Drobo Dashboard that anything is happening and none of the lights are blinking.

It's been about 12 hours since I added a 3TB drive, would just like to know when I expect it to resume normal operation.

RE: What is Drobo doing in background by itself?
hi i also added a 2TB drive into my 5d (making it the 3rd drive inside)
and for about 1 night (overnight) plus 2 partial evenings, the drives were churning away.

(it wasnt really that slow, i think speeds ranged from about 30-90MB for some larger transfers during this) - but i think the process is likely to take almost the same amount of time as a rebuild, which could be upto 1day per 1TB of data that you have, since essentially it kind of is performing a visually-silent rebuild of sorts, becase it has to fully integrate the new disk into the pack, and to calculate and share data and parity etc.

(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused)
& a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)
  • btw i did a sustained (write) operation for about 6 hours, and got 13.2MB / sec ...objection? "sustained" :)
    (16.7MB/s on a v2 & 47-96MB/s drobo-s)
