Hitachi Travelstar 1TB (0S03563) Drives compatible with Drobo Mini?
Does anyone know of the Hitachi Travelstar 1TB (0503563) is compatible with the DROBO MINI? They are 7600 RPM devices.
I was also thinking about the Momentus drives but I am not sure the hybrid drive buys performance on a RAID device like this...does the onboard SSD mitigate the slower 5400 rpm? I'd like to know before I buy 4 of them. |

The NVRAM on hybrid will only mitigate repeated access to the same data. If you're jumping all over the place reading different stuff, it won't help like faster RPM does.

I cannot locate anything about 0503563
However, I am running two of the HTS721010A9 which are the 7200 RPM 1TB drives and have not had a problem in six months. The Drobo Mini is my mobile data system ( sync of my Desktop Drobo ) and doesn't get heavily flogged. The biggest work-out it gets is when I stream a movie from my iTunes Library stored on the Drobo Mini to my Apple TV. |

Those HGST Travelstar drives definitely work on the Drobo Mini, we do not recommend Momentus XT drives. Those hybrid drives are not supported in the Drobo Mini. |

RE: Hitachi Travelstar 1TB (0S03563) Drives compatible with Drobo Mini?
I purchased 4x1TB HGST Travelstar drives in Nov last year, 3 out of 4 died recently. I filed a warranty claim and two of those have already died.
So in 6 months out of 7 drives, 5 have failed. Is it the Drobo or HGST quality? I've been using other Drobos for years and not had anywhere near this kind of failure rate. |

at first read, it sounds like its more to do with those HGST drives
(btw i have XP home SP2, a Drobo v1 with 2x 1TB/2x 1.5TB WD greens, & a bkp Drobo v2 with the same + a DroboShare: unused) & a DroboS v2 with 3xWD15EADS &2x1TB in DDR mode on win7, & a drobo5D (all usb)

Remember that the form factor determines mainly the width, not the height of the drive. Long story short, some drives have more "headroom" which affects airflow. The Hitachi drives may have less space for air to circulate around them and are getting more thermal stress in the Drobo environment than they would elsewhere. Drobo may also be stressing the drives in some manner, but likely it has to do with the cooling performance and "fit" in the chassis. --Brandon | WHS2011+Drive Bender/2x Drobo v2/Drobo S G1/ Drobo S G2/Transporter Drobo provides fault-tolerance, it's NOT a substitute for regular backups.
